I always ask my classes why I named my kiln Harry....puzzled looks - Harry Truman? Harry Styles? Prince Harry of Wales? Then they get it - Harry POTTER! Of course! Besides the obvious (you make pottery, you are a potter), there is the little bit of magic that must be involved to turn grey dirt (clay is basically just elastic dirt) into glass! One of the highlights of my day is opening up the kiln to see what the pieces look like after firing - First you lift the lid just a few inches and take a peek (still too hot to really OPEN it), and you see the colors for the first time! Then you put on your gloves and pull them out like fresh cookies from the oven. It is always exciting to see how the pieces turned out! We offer clay handbuilding classes - you should come and try it!
